Devoney Looser, Professor of English at the University of Missouri, will deliver a plenary lecture at the Burney Society Conference in Bethlehem, PA, on October 8, 2009. Looser's lecture, “‘An Elderly Lady With No Remains of Personal Beauty’: Frances Burney and Old Age,” considers Burney's lesser-known writings, published in her later years, for their self-conscious treatment of female aging and for the strong responses they provoked. The lecture follows up on arguments in Looser's book, Women Writers and Old Age in Great Britain, 1750-1850 (2008). The Burney Society http://burneycentre.mcgill.ca/burneysociety.html honors the celebrated novelist and diarist Frances Burney d'Arblay (1752-1840), in order to promote the study and appreciation of Burney's works and of the life and times of her and her family. Looser serves as the co-editor of the Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies, published by Indiana University Press.
